Virtual Neighborhood Watch

Purpose

Neighborhood Watch is one of the best ways to prevent crime and help keep neighborhoods strong. Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that uses the active participation of residents, in cooperation with the police department, to reduce crime in their communities. Currently, Mt. Juliet's neighborhood watch is done almost exclusively online via Nextdoor, the first private social network for neighborhoods.

Neighborhood Watch helps neighbors get to know each other, learn how to work together, and have active communication. Nextdoor allows just that by connect neighborhoods online and on a smartphone app.

What is Nextdoor?

Nextdoor is free for residents and for the City. Each neighborhood creates its own private Nextdoor website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood.

Mt. Juliet residents can use Nextdoor to get to know their neighbors, ask questions, and exchange local advice and recommendations.  Neighbors who use Nextdoor share information about neighborhood watch issues, local events, school activities, plumber and babysitter recommendations, upcoming garage sales or even lost pets.  We believe a healthier and more engaged city creates stronger communities and Nextdoor can help to do just that.

How Does Nextdoor Work?

Nextdoor was specifically designed to make neighbors feel comfortable sharing information with one another in order to help build stronger communities.

Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website.

Information shared on each Nextdoor site is only visible to members who live in the neighborhood and who have verified their address.  Currently, Mt. Juliet has been mapped into 39 different neighborhoods. Over 7,000 residents are on Nextdoor, and 40% of households are represented.

Privacy:

Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by those outside the neighborhood or found on Google or other search engines.  In addition, Nextdoor never shares personal information with any third parties. Unlike an email list or other online group, neighbor posts are organized and archived for future reference.

How Do I Sign Up?

Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit www.nextdoor.com and enter their home address. If Nextdoor is already launched in your area you can immediately sign up. If a Nextdoor website has not yet been established for your area we encourage you to become the lead for your neighborhood and get started today.

Be Proactive

Do not be reactive to crime. Frequently, we see people only wanting to join a Neighborhood Watch only after crime is already a problem in their neighborhood. Be proactive and stop crime before it occurs. Get connected.
