Water Quality/Stormwater Division

Stormwater Pollution Cause

When it rains or as snow melts, the resulting stormwater flows over roads or ground surfaces, pick up debris, chemicals, oils, salt, sediment, metals, bacteria, and other pollutants. These can have harmful effects on drinking water supplies, recreation, fish and other wildlife.

Stormwater Pollution Prevention

  • Don’t dump anything into a catch basin, drain pipe or storm sewer grate.
  • Properly dispose of all paints, used motor oil, and hazardous waste.
  • Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly.
  • Pick up after you pet and dispose waste in the toilet or trash.
  • Wash your vehicles at a carwash, or in the grass off paved surfaces.
  • Pick up litter.
